Blue Light blocking lenses

It seems like everyone is talking about blue light and blue light blocking lenses. There's a valid reason for this; you must be reading this article on a VDU screen (smartphone, tablet, laptop). Hence you're exposing your eyes to blue light at the moment.

We 're continually exposed to blue light, outdoors as well as indoors. In this day and age, we spend more time staring at iPad, monitors, and smartphone screens. This increases the exposure of blue light to the eye and retina.

What is blue light and its effects?

Blue light is a small part of the visible light spectrum, which has the shortest wavelengths (400-500nm) and has the highest amount of energy.

The human eye does not block blue light well. The eye has two main structures at the front called the cornea and lens that block UV rays from reaching the back of the eye called the retina. However, blue light isn't blocked and passes through these structures and can reach the retina.

Hence blue light can increase the risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, which can lead to blindness if not detected in its early stages and treated.

Children's eyes are still developing; hence they don't have protective pigments to enable them to block harmful rays.

Blue light can also disrupt the body clock as the brain associates blue light as daytime. If one is exposed to blue light for a prolonged period, this can make it harder to fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning.

What is the solution?

Blue light blocking lenses work by filtering out a specific wavelength of the spectrum.
